American by Craft: The Furniture of Olof Althin (virtual)

In 1881, Olof Althin arrived in Boston with a set of tools and drive to succeed. Thirty years later, the Swedish immigrant was among the most accomplished and acclaimed cabinetmakers in New England, known for his “perfect and faultless” furniture and navigation of the competitive artistic and commercial landscape in turn-of-the-century Boston. During the course of his career, Althin earned acclaim for repairing, restoring, and appraising antiques, along with making reproductions of period furniture. Working alongside two of the great early collectors of American decorative arts, Althin eventually became an authority on the style and heritage of his adopted nation. Join Associate Curator Erica Lome as she explores the remarkable life of this immigrant artisan through the work and words he left behind.
